The Lake&the Wine: Corbara
The lake - infact - was originated in the 50s' to produce electricity through a dam on the river Tiber (Il Tevere), even if this area -along the existing basin- was known in ancient times also by the Etruscans and the Romans who built there tombs, temples and even an important commercial river port.
Although Corbara lake is artificial, the view of the entire area is really gorgeous. You can have one of the best views on the basin driving to the top of the hill of Civitella del Lago, ancient hamlet dominated during the Middle Ages by the noble families of Fredi and Atti coming from Todi.
The gorgeous view from Civitella, sometimes it is possible to see even Orvieto
Corbara Lake offers not only amazing views and places, but also a famous local food tradition and a renowned wine production.
On the road that leads to Orvieto, just beside the lake, there is one of the “temples” of Italian Cuisine, the restaurant "Vissani", conducted since 1974 by the eclectic Umbrian Cook Gianfranco Vissani, born in Civitella del Lago, the “Gordon Ramsay from Umbria”, one of the top Chef of “La Cucina Italiana”.
If a stop at “Vissani” could be maybe over your budget, you can spend the rest of your day discovering the special wine production of the area, visiting the wineries located on both sides of the lake.
The vines&the lake
In 1998 an executive decree recognized the DOC (Controlled Origin Denomination) appellation for “Lago di Corbara” red wines.
The area of production of “Lago di Corbara DOC” includes the territory of the Municipality of Baschi and the villages of Corbara, Fossatello, Colonnetta di Prodo and Titignano belonging to Orvieto.
“Lago di Corbara DOC” red wines are “intense ruby red with an agreeable vinous scent, full-bodied and harmonious” and they go well with both red and white meat dishes. They should be served at a temperature of 12-13 degrees C. in a tulip shaped goblet and can be drunk up to the sixth year or more after the vintage.
